Environment Court rules Mōtītī reefs in need of protection

No one will be allowed to take any kind of marine life from three reef areas surrounding Mōtītī Island from tomorrow onwards. This follows a decision made by the Environment Court that has ruled the area's biodiversity and cultural value to be special and in need of protection.

Coromandel's Eastern Peninsula community is outraged commercial fishing boats, donning pirate flags, are harvesting scallops in a rāhui zone. They were spotted in the area yesterday, which has been under a voluntary rāhui since December to allow scallop beds to recover.

The Environment Minister says banning bottom trawling in areas that haven't been trawled before may be a good idea. Conservation group, WWF, says virgin sea bed covering an area three times the size of Auckland has been trawled by fishermen over the past decade.

Protected wildlife birds shot: DOC appeals for information

A one-year-old kākā had to be euthanised after being shot in the latest of a series of shootings against other protected wildlife in Auckland. The Department of Conservation (DOC) initially found the bird alive on 13 May after it was shot in Whangateau on Auckland's northeast coast.
