A MARINE protected area is an internationally recognized area of ocean (or of land and ocean combined) where human activities such as tourism, development and fishing are managed to ensure sustainability.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are a primary management tool for mitigating threats to marine biodiversity. MPAs and the species they protect, however, are increasingly being impacted by climate change. 

French endurance athlete Ben Lecomte just set out to become the first person to swim across the entire Pacific Ocean—a feat that will take more than six months if he logs eight hours in the water a day. More than a physical challenge, the swim is an act of conservation.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Enviornment Programme (SPREP) establisjed the Barana Community Nature Park purposely to promote ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change and environmental management.
