The Ministry of Climate Change Adaptation, through its Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation (DEPC) in partnership with Conservation International recently hosted a project validation meeting for Vanuatu’s upcoming Community Conservation Areas (CCA) Project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The GEF-8 project will help meet Vanuatu’s commitment under the Global Biodiversity Framework and its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan to conserve at least 30% of its land, waters, and seas by 2030. A key innovation of the project is its focus on resolving economic barriers to strong CCAs. By working directly with customary landowners, CCA committees, and government institutions, the initiative will strengthen kastom governance systems while enhancing legal and financial pathways for conservation.
