There have been breaches at the Vathe Conservation Area at Big Bag on Santo, but the management committee has been unable to address them due to lack of support from the Department of Environment. This was conveyed by the Vice-Chairman of the Steering Committee, Bill Tavue.
He said the Environment Act is not effectively applied within the conservation area. He stressed that the committee has informed several cases to the department but has received no response. He said a case happened in 2022 involved one of the landowners entering the Vathe Conservation Area and cut trees for logging.
