Oceania is geographically one of IUCN’s largest regional programmes, covering much of the central and south west Pacific Ocean as well as Australia and New Zealand. The Pacific Islands cover almost 15% of the world’s ocean surface.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are recognized as highly effective tools for marine conservation. They may also play an important role in mitigating climate change.

The NEMS 2021-2025 is the first for PNG and is linked to the SoE 2020 report. It is intended to guide various stakeholders in collaboration with CEPA to implement key policies, programmes and actions, to promote sustainable development and conservation of the environment of the country.

This session will explore three levels of governance: regional, national and interinstitutional.
